The White Hart Hotel restoration was one of New Plymouth’s most significant heritage construction projects, involving the preservation and strengthening of a Category 1 Historic Place that has been part of the city’s history for more than a century.
Street & Cook Construction undertook the careful restoration of the building’s historic façade and verandah while major redevelopment works were carried out behind the original structure. The project required extensive temporary support works, specialist construction methodologies and close coordination to protect important heritage features throughout construction.
During the restoration process, original cobblestones dating back to the site’s early history were uncovered and preserved beneath a purpose designed glass floor, allowing visitors to connect with the building’s past.
Today, the White Hart Hotel stands as a successful example of heritage restoration, combining historic character with modern functionality while preserving one of Taranaki’s most recognisable landmarks.
